Complement vs Compliment

One letter, very different jobs — and each can be a noun or a verb.

  • COMPLEMENT (with E) — to complete or go well with (verb), or the thing that completes (noun). Wine complements cheese. A scarf is the perfect complement.
  • COMPLIMENT (with I) — to praise (verb), or the nice thing said (noun). She complimented my hat. What a lovely compliment.
