The Modal Game
| The Modal Game | |||
| This is a simple and flexible board game for eliciting modal sentences. Print the spreadsheet file and have a few game tokens handy (coins will be fine). Then you'll need either an eight-sided die or eight slips that students can randomly draw out of a hat or box. (Here is one place where you can get eight-sided dice!) If you want, you can make your own eight-sided die using paper; just make it using equilateral triangles that are connected, four at each corner. (Opposite faces should add up to nine.) |
To play, you roll (or draw a slip) and move that number of spaces. Then read what's written where you've landed. If there's a scenario, think of something to say about it using the modal verb/expression assigned to what you rolled/drew. The Start space just asks you a don't have to question, and three corner spaces ask you to complete a sentence using your modal verb/expression. There's no defined end. You can play for points, or for as long as the game is fun. |
