Bad Ideas

An enjoyable way to practice descriptive verbs and body parts (and the occasional dangerous noun) is to imagine the terrible consequences of stupidity. Students need only propose one of these torturous actions, then a partner--or the entire class--can tell them why it's a bad idea.

For example:
Student A: "I'm going to chew some nails!"
Student B: "You'll injure your tongue!"
...or...
Student A: "I'm going to kick a fire hydrant!"
Student B: "You'll break your big toe!"

This activity works in groups of any size. It also is a nice warmer if the students don't need too much close monitoring. You can present the list as a sheet or cut into individual cards.

I'm going to...
chew some nails   step on a rake
kick a fire hydrant   lick a very cold flagpole
bite a snake   climb a tree while it’s on fire

wear very heavy earrings   play soccer with a knight in armor

touch the bottom of a hot iron   eat some spiders

stick my fingers in the electrical outlet   kiss a knife

kneel on broken glass   stick a lit match up my nose
